A group of mercenaries are hired to infiltrate a South American country to overthrow its ruthless dictator - er, not a startlingly original storyline then. But of course, what makes all this a bit different - and something of a guilty pleasure for action movie fans - is that it brings together just about every movie action hero since the 80s.

That means cameo roles for Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzeneggar, starring roles for Sly Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke et al... but no Jean Claude Van Damme or Steven Segal, who turned down the chance to jump aboard this back-to-basics romp, full of guys with muscles, guns and explosions.

With an A to Z cast of tough guy action heroes, and no fancy-dan direction, Stallone has managed to produce a film that has hit the No 1 box-office slot in America. It's a simple tale -  Sly plays Barney Ross, the guy who takes his trusted team of hired help into the heart of danger and you can expect a block-buster of an action ending. So, get the popcorn and settle down for a testosterone-fuelled ride. Stallone is already talking about The Expendables 2 and has tweeted that he wants to ask Bruce Willis to play the baddie.
