In a recent pre-Golden Globes interview George Clooney said that he would be amazed if his latest movie did not find itself up for best film Oscar, because “…it’s that good.”
Well, it looks as though he is right to expect it to feature heavily in all movie awards this year. Last weekend The Descendants won best picture, and Gorgeous George picked up the best actor gong at the Golden Globes.
It’s described as a black comedy drama and yes, it fits that bill. Clooney is Matt King, a Honolulu-based lawyer and the sole trustee of a family trust that controls 25,000 acres of valuable land on the island of Kaua’I. The trust has just decided to sell the land for development when a boating accident tragically leaves Matt’s wife Elizabeth in a coma. Doctors tell Matt that Elizabeth will never recover and he needs to prepare for her life support system to be shut down. So the hot-shot lawyer who knows that he is not close to his daughters, 10-year-old Scottie (Amara Miller) and 17-year-old Alex (Woodley) has to step up to the plate and take responsibility. Alex tells her dad that mum Elizabeth has been having an affair with real estate agent Brian (Lillard) and Matt and the girls head off on a road journey to find Brian so he can say goodbye to Elizabeth.
During the journey Matt finds out a lot about himself and even more about the daughters he has been so distant from, in what the critics have universally described as a funny, moving and beautifully acted movie. How was Brian tied up in the family land deal? And does Matt rebuild his family relationships?
There are laughs, and moments when you might need a hankie, and Clooney and the two girls make this a movie to savour.
