Woman climber falls to death
A 29-year-old woman fell some 60 metres to her death on Sunday while climbing a rock face in El Chorro which is popular with climbers for practice. The friend she was with, identified only as F.J.V.G., was left hanging but was able to call for help on his mobile. The Guardia Civil’s mountain rescue unit, Alora’s Proteccion Civil and the Local Police rescued the man, who told his rescuers that they were preparing to rappel down the rock face when the women fell.

A 71-year-old man was killed and his 73-year-old wife was seriously injured on Monday morning when part of a load of construction materials slipped off a lorry and fell on them as they walked along the pavement near Aquapark on the N-340. The man was killed instantly and the woman was rushed to the Clinico Universitario in Málaga where she underwent surgery for head injuries and a broken tibia. The Local Police are investigating the cause of the slippage.
Fines help fill coffers
Since the beginning of March, just under €1 million in fines has entered the town hall’s coffers, a council spokesman said last week. He said more 2,000 fines had been issued in that period – 816 of them for traffic violations, 85 street vendors had paid fines up to €3,000 and there were 78 cases of unauthorised advertising, with fines of €300. The spokesman added that the Local Police and the Tax Office were being reorganised to make them more efficient at issuing and collecting fines.
