The National Police have arrested three men who work for a genuine gas company for taking advantage of their position to rob clients.
The men had all the correct documents and uniforms so they had no trouble getting clients to allow them to enter the house. Once inside, two of the men would distract the client with lengthy explanations about the work that needed doing to their gas installations while the third would search for jewellery and other valuable objects.
Like the bogus gas inspectors, the men targeted older people living alone. The police got on to them after a 100-year-old man reported that €800 had disappeared during the men’s visit.
In April, the police arrested 14 bogus gas inspectors who charged exorbitant sums of money for unnecessary repairs and replacements.
The local press constantly remind people not to allow any “gas inspector” in without prior notification from the company concerned but now they must be wondering how many of the legitimate ones can be trusted.
