Mijas town council has announced it will offer facilities to the owners of illegal properties which will give them up to ten years to pay the fines they receive,
However, owners must agree to an interest rate of 5 per cent and pay a minimum of €100 a month. The fines range from €5,000 to €50,000, sums that many owners cannot lay their hands on.
Town planning councillor Manuel Navarro said it was impossible to say exactly how many fines were outstanding
“because we have 30 boxes full of them”.
Just over 4,000 properties are involved, he said, of which 2,800 will encounter no problems in the legalization process.
The document setting out the regularisation process has been posted on the council’s web page.
