Some 600 young flamingos have been ringed at the Laguna de Piedra – the most important breeding ground in the western Mediterranean area for these birds. Thanks to the water level at the lagoon – the highest for 13 years – some 400 volunteers were able to ring 600 of the 8,000 flamingo chicks produced by 15,000 pairs of birds this year. Hundreds of visitors attend the ringing every year and all agreed this was one of the best years ever – thanks to the unusually wet winter. The numbers of birds returning to the breeding ground had been falling off drastically in recent year because of the drought.
