four of them women, which was last seen leaving Alhucemas in Morocco on Saturday. The Spanish authorities were alerted by a relative of one of the immigrants on board after he failed to make contact on his mobile phone. It is believed the boat is adrift in the area known as the Mar de Alboran off the coast of Malaga but it had still not been sighted by press time.
On Monday, another two boats which were carrying 18 Moroccans arrived safe and sound in La Fabriquillas in the Cabo de Gata natural park. Two days earlier a Spanish ferry and a Cypriot ferry rescued 57 immigrants in a boat adrift some 50 miles south of Motril in Granada province.
They were from Bangladesh and Somalia – 47 were taken to Alhucemas in Morocco and the remaining 10 were taken to Melilla. Meanwhile, a lifeboat from Ceuta picked up 12 Moroccans who were trying to reach the Spanish coast on two inflatable rafts, described by one rescuer as being “like those used by children to play on the beach”.
