If the regional elections were held today, Partido Popular Andalucia leader Javier Arenas would be elected premier of the Junta de Andalucía with a majority of one, according to the latest poll by the Instituto de Investigación, Marketing y Comunicación (IMC).
The survey found that the drop in votes for the Socialist Party, which has governed Andalucia since it became an autonomous region in December 1981, was particularly marked in its two main strongholds, Sevilla and Cadiz. When asked which politician was the most qualified to lead the region out of the current economic crisis, just over 35% chose Sr Arenas while only 25% named current Junta premier José Antonio Griñán. Nearly 30% said “neither of the two”.
