The mayor of Benamahoma in Cadiz province resigned last week for “health and personal reasons”, but the local people believe it was caused by the purification of the bullring on St John's Night. To achieve this, Mayor Joaquin Ramon Gomez had organised a huge bonfire and a “white magic” rite to “free” the souls of the 150 or so people who were executed in the bullring during the Civil War. He was criticised by his fellow Socialists who said he had “gone too far”, as well as by the Movement for the Recovery of Historical Memory which aims to redress the harm done by the Franco dictatorship.
