The owners of 15,000 “illegal” houses in Chiclana, Sevilla province, have formed their own political party, the Partido Vecinal Regionalista, to fight for the regularisation of their properties via the ballot box in next year’s regional elections. The Junta de Andalucia has ruled that the properties cannot be included in the town’s Urban Plan which means they could eventually be demolished.
The party was registered on June 21st at the Ministry of the Interior and a spokesman said it would “fight from within” the period of time stipulated by the local council for regularising the properties and the costs involved, which the owners do not agree with. The “Platform of People affected by the Regularisation”, consisting of discontented owners from 44 urbanisations, has been organising protests for months – the last one was held outside the Town Hall on March 20th and was attended by 7,000 people.
