The Junta de Andalucia's Agriculture and Fisheries department has imposed a €2,001 fine on the man who threw a turkey from a church bell tower in Cazalilla, Jaen province, in February.
It is the minimum fine for what the 2003 Animal Protection Law classifies as a “very serious” infraction. A spokesman for the National Association for the Protection and Wellbeing of Animals (Anpba) said that despite repeated fines since 2004, the spectacle takes place every August during the so-called Migrants Fiesta, and often in February too.
The spokesman said: “It is obvious that fines will not put an end to this spectacle.” However, Anpba is now campaigning for the maximum fine of €30,000 to be imposed in future.
