Manuel Gracia, who has been out of work for three years, has decided to walk to Madrid to present a letter to Parliament demanding his right to a decent job.
The 38-year-old Ronda resident will walk 34 kilometres a day and should reach the capital 22 days after setting off. He’ll be travelling off the main roads and hopes to pick up letters of support from unemployed people in the towns and villages he’ll pass through.
He’ll have €50 in his pocket and says he will have to rely on the kindness of strangers for food and water along the way. He told a local newspaper: “My backpack is not heavy, but my current situation is”. His family – he has two teenage children - are currently living on the €500 his wife earns in a part-time job and he has run out of his dole credits.
