The Guardia Civil are continuing their search for 63-year-old Gordon Simm, who has been missing since he went for a hike up the Chillar valley in Nerja on Saturday, July 21st.
The chief of Malaga’s eastern firefighters, Manuel Pitos, said on Monday that Simm was an experienced hiker, in good physical shape who knew the Sierra de Almijara well.
He added: “It’s a hard area, but you can survive. There are caves where you can take refuge, and there are parts with water. We must not lose hope.” He referred to the case of a Dutch tourist lost in the same area just over a year who was rescued after 20 days.
A Guardia Civil spokesman said there had been a heavy fog in the area on Sunday, July 22nd, and it would have been easy for Simm to become disoriented and lose his way.
Other groups taking part in the search include the GREA Andalucía Emergency Rescue Group, the Dog Rescue Unit from the provincial fire service in Málaga, the ERIEM mountain rescue team from Álora and local teams from Nerja and Frigiliana.
