U3A Historic Lecture

The U3A will be holding their monthly lecture on Monday the 30th of January, the subject will be “Slavery and the British Empire – A Road to Prosperity and Reform”. The lecture will be held in the hall of the Ark Christian Fellowship, at Las Rampas, Fuengirola. The talk will be given by Chris Beckett, who will talk about slavery, its place in history and its effect on the growth of the British Empire – he will use graphics to enhance his talk.  He will also be telling his audience about the horrors of the “Slave Triangle”.

Other avenues covered will be how the slave trade created institutions that effected the growth of the British Empire – with  many fortunes being made and then lost – plus the new cities that were developed as a result.
Finally Chris will explain why the riches of the slave trade carried the ”seed” of its own destruction – and the legacy of the slave trade for us all now.

Doors will open at 16.00 and the talk will commence at 16.30 for approximately an hour. Attendance is free to U3A members, with a small charge of €5 to non-members.

U3A lectures are designed to give people an opportunity to meet like-minded folk while learning more about our history.
