Usually, the first day of the summer sales sees shops besieged by eager buyers – but not this year.
Some store staff in La Cañada told a local paper that many people were not aware that shops could open on Sunday so they went to the beach instead. Others said that too many people were thinking only of the Eurocup final between Spain and Italy that night and shopping was something they would only start thinking about on Monday.
However, other stores reported queues of people waiting outside as early as 9 am, eager to get first shot at clothes and other items marked with discounts of 50 and 70 per cent. While the first day of the sales was disappointing for some stores, staff predicted that would change because thanks to the economic crisis, many people have put off buying until the summer sales come along.
