‘Old-fashioned’ jail break attempt
Alhaurin de la Torre prison authorities reported on Monday that an “old-fashioned” jail break attempt, using sheets and towels knotted together, had been foiled. Acting on intuition and a strange atmosphere in Module 9, some guards decided on Saturday to inspect the cell of a 37-year-old man from Malaga, who was being held in preventive detention. They found the “rope” under his bed, as well as a letter telling his family why he planned to escape. He was immediately transferred to a security cell. The authorities said they doubted the “rope” would have got him across an outer five-metre high wall topped with wire.
Vehicles burnt on AVE site
Firemen were called to a construction site on the high-speed AVE Antequera- Bobadillas line to deal with a fire involving 19 vehicles in the early hours of Monday morning.
The emergency number 112 received the call at 5.20 am when the blaze was already raging after the petrol tank of one of the vehicles exploded, spreading the fire to nearby lorries, a water tanker, a van and a digger. The blaze was quickly brought under control. The Guardia Civil are investigating the possibility of sabotage.
