Cadiz mayor Teofila Martinez has decided to allow naturism at La Gallega beach near the Torregorda military base, after opposing it at any of the beaches in her jurisdiction for years. Sra Martinez explained her change of attitude, saying that she had finally decided to recognise the fact that naturists have traditionally used that beach because its many dunes afford them privacy. In the past, naturists caught there have been fined and despite the mayor's decision, this could still happen.
A council spokesman said no signs will be put up to mark off the area and nudists who strayed outside it would still be fined. The announcement was made the day before the Naturists Federation of Spain was due to lodge a complaint against the Cadiz Ayuntamiento at the High Court in Seville.
