After an incident that saw a Guardia Civil craft intercept and detain crew from a Gibraltarian fishing boat off the island, this bulletin has been released:
Following a meeting with representatives of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Daniel Pruce, Chargé d’Affaires at the British Embassy in Madrid said:
“I have today met representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in order to convey the British Government’s deepest concerns at the incident in British Gibraltar Territorial Waters on Friday 20th July. A Guardia Civil vessel intercepted a Gibraltarian fishing boat, detained two British Nationals and transferred them to Algeciras. They were later released without charge but the Guardia Civil confiscated some of their fishing equipment. There was no basis in international law to take such actions.
The Governments of the UK and Spain are longstanding allies. We are partners in the EU, NATO and the wider international community. I have today stressed to the Ministry of Foreign affairs that such action by the law enforcement agencies of such a close and valued partner is intolerable and unlawful.”
