First married gay soldier gets the boot

Alberto Linero Marchena, who claims to be the world’s first married gay soldier, told reporters on Monday that he has been expelled from the Army “after two years of threats, abuses and propositions”.

His expulsion will be published in the Ministry of Defence’s Official Gazette on September 1st, giving as the reason the fact that he has been receiving psychiatric treatment since November 2009. A source in the Ministry denied that Linero had been threatened or abused and said an internal investigation had shown that the soldiers he had denounced were innocent.

In September 2006, Linero and Alberto Sánchez Fernández, a soldier based in Morón de la Frontera (Seville), were married at Sevilla City Hall wearing their dress uniforms. Several soldiers were among the 100 guests. It was the first homosexual marriage between Spanish soldiers.
