The BBC, Reuters, The Times, France Presse, Le Figaro and CNN are among the international media which have sent camera teams and reporters to Barcelona to cover a possible ban on bullfighting, due to be debated in the Catalan Parliament today (Wednesday).
The World Society for the Protection of Animals delivered a petition to the Catalan Parliament on Monday, signed by 140,000 people in 120 countries, supporting the initiative to ban bullfighting.
The Platform for the Defence of the Fiesta has published a report showing that the ban will cost the regional government some €300 million in compensations to be paid to bull breeders, ring owners and related activities and put hundreds of people out of work. But it looks as if the ban will go ahead. At the last parliamentary debate on the matter in December, 67 Catalan MPs voted for the ban and 59 against. Since going to press it has been decided that the ban will go ahead in Catalan from the start of the 2012 season.
