New investment heralds changes at Mifaflores!

Miraflores Bowls Club announced this week some exciting changes that will take place over the next few months. Firstly, a decision has been made to invest in a new carpet for the west green, with the existing carpet and a new underlay going to the east green. Bowlers may recall that the east green base was relaid in 2006. Unfortunately, despite the work being carried out by the same specialist, the result was not as good as the excellent west green. Therefore, some remedial work will be carried out before the carpet is laid. This will then provide us with two excellent bowling surfaces to provide the best facilities to all bowlers on the Costa del Sol. Negotiations are under way with manufacturers but it is anticipated that everything will be completed before the new bowling season gets underway in late September.

As part of the review that was undertaken before deciding on replacing the carpet, the current membership structure was considered and it was decided to implement a number of changes in this respect. The result of this is that with immediate effect there will no longer be a joining fee payable (formerly €150). The existing annual membership category will continue running from January to December (Currently €425 p.a. pro-rated at the time of joining). Additionally the club will be introducing a six-monthly membership category (details of which will be available soon). This represents a major change but it is believed to be the right thing to do to recognise the changing demographics of bowlers on the coast with fewer people taking up permanent residency and a tendency to retain a home base in their country of origin and a winter home here in Spain.

Finally, it’s that “Footbowl” time of year again, Dudley will again be organising the summer Footbowl competition which will start in the next few weeks. All bowlers are welcome to participate in this fun competition at the reduced green fee of €7. Again contact Carol or Grant to find out more.
