Not good enough Malaga

Sporting Gijon 2 - 1 Malaga

After a battling display against Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey  which eventually resulted in a 4-2 aggregate score line, Malaga went to Gijon looking for a vital three points to push for Europe.

After a good start for Malaga it was Sporting who had the first good chance after eight minutes, after some loose Malaga defending. Barral then went close after 20 minutes, and Malaga for all their possession lacked a cutting edge.  An innocuous free kick was met by debutant Glauiz on 35 minutes to poke home and Malaga then had to chase the game.

The second half began with Malaga creating chances and enjoying possession, Van Nistelrooy had a chance and Eliseu hit the post on 57 minutes.  Carzola then had a good shout for a penalty which was waved away by the referee.  Van Nistelrooy, who was having his best game all season then had a scrambled attempt cleared from the line.  On 87 minutes Ruud looked to have salvaged a point for Malaga after shooting home from inside the box.  It wasn’t to be though as Malaga were cruelly undone albeit by a brilliant finish from outside the box by sub Trejo, on 92 minutes to seal the game for Gijon.

With Barcelona next week on Sunday at 6pm, Malaga's future league position does not look bright.
