Lewis Hamilton led an action packed Belgian Grand Prix from start to finish, posting a momentous victory in a drama packed afternoon at Spa-Francorchamps while his championship rivals faltered. Hamilton led home Mark Webber who recovered from a forgetable start to finish second ahead of Renault’s Robert Kubica who at one stage looked certain for second place.
The top three finished within 3.4 seconds of each other as a late safety car period brought the pack together, after Hamilton had opened up a gap of over a dozen seconds before the rain returned. Hamilton’s victory came after some heart stopping moments, where he had a major moment through turn 8 when rain came down for a final time.
He went through the gravel and looked as if he was heading for a collision with the wall, luckily for him he just brushed it and from then on he stayed error free until he crossed the line to take the chequered flag. Hamilton then sported the biggest grin in the paddock, this was one race he really wanted and a major result in this championship.
Jenson Button failed to finish as he fell victim of a bizarre move by Sebastian Vettel which saw the out of control Red Bull plunge into the side of the McLaren Mercedes while the pair were battling for second and third. Commenting on Vettel’s drive-through penalty the reigning champion said, “What else can you give him? It was a racing incident, he didn’t do it on purpose but what else can you do?”
Alonso was another non-finisher after crashing out at Les Combs in the wet conditions.
