Following the success of this “Fun Day” over the last five years, the format remained unchanged. Each team, resplendent in red and white, drew a scorecard on arrival to determine their opponents for the four games.
Two points were awarded for a win and 1 point for a draw. With 14 well-balanced triples competing, competition was tough from the outset and there was only one team with maximum points after the opening two games, that of Geoff Edginton, Maureen Robertshaw and Lynn Heseltine.
A heavy defeat to John Carr’s team in their third game brought Geoff, Norma and Alan into the pack to set up an intriguing set of final games with six teams in contention for the hamper prizes.
In the “driving seat” was Malcolm Greenwood having secured an impressive draw in his second game by picking up three shots on the last end. The draw pitched them against Neil Stanton’s team in a “winner takes all” encounter which Malcolm, Dennis and Wendy won 14-4, winning five of the eight ends. So, with first place decided, the fight was on for 2nd and 3rd and it was tight.
John Carr’s team continued to make steady progress and won six ends in their 12-6 win over Barry Pemberton’s triple whilst Kate Morris had a convincing 11-3 victory over Alan Turner, Rena Beveridge and Susan Walker. It was, ultimately, the number of ends won which gave John, Claire and Mike second place ( no favouritism for the Province’s National Delegate ) with Kate, Norma and Alan in third.
Competition for the “booby prize” was also fierce and, despite having won one game, there were three teams in contention. A strong performance in their final game, where they won four ends, was not sufficient to prevent Pat Fisher, John Morgan and Ilona Ott from taking home the “bubbly”!
